Birthplace Sulmone Death Date 17 ou 18 ap. J.-C. Biographical Text Poète romain du Iᵉʳ siècle av. J.-C., Ovide porte le nom latin de Publius Ovidius Naso. Né dans une famille aisée d’ordre équestre originaire de Sulmone en Italie centrale, il suit une éducation soignée et étudie la rhétorique et la poésie à Rome. Vers 25 av. J.-C., il publie son premier recueil de poèmes, Les Amours. Il y aborde le thème de l’amour en prodiguant des conseils et des récits sur l’art de séduire et d’être séduit. Le succès immédiat de son ouvrage lui vaut la reconnaissance de tous les cercles culturels et littéraires de Rome. Auteur d’une quinzaine de recueils poétiques, il écrit une poésie didactique, romantique, élégiaque, et même épique. Son œuvre la plus célèbre est Les Métamorphoses. Ce poème épique de quinze livres relate les mythes et légendes de la mythologie gréco-romaine liés aux transformations non-naturelles qui changent l’apparence d’un être. Toute la vie d’Ovide se déroule sous le règne d’Auguste, où de nombreuses modifications sont apportées à Rome, via des transformations politiques et sociales. Il impose une certaine morale et promeut des valeurs traditionnelles au sein de la société romaine. En 8 ap. J.-C., Ovide se voit exilé de Rome sur simple édit de l’empereur Auguste. Il est assigné à résidence à Tomis, en Scythie mineure sur les rives de la mer Noire jusqu’à sa mort. Les raisons de cet exil sont floues, peut-être pour la rédaction d’écrits offensants ou la connaissance de scandales impériaux, mais le poète se construit une nouvelle vie. Jusqu’à sa mort en 17 ou 18 ap. J.-C., il continue à écrire des poèmes. Souvent, il y exprime sa nostalgie de Rome et de sa vie antérieure.
