Indigné, Cinyras tente de la tuer, mais Myrrha s’enfuit et implore les dieux de lui venir en aide. Pour la protéger et la punir, ils la transforment en arbre à myrrhe. Aimé d’Apollon et de Favonius, Zéphyr dans la mythologie grecque, il succombe à sa blessure à la tête, suite au choc d’un disque dévié par Favonius, jaloux de voir son amour épris d’une autre divinité. Dévasté par la perte de son amant, Apollon transforme le sang de Hyacinthe en parterre de fleurs (des hyacinthes). Pour honorer Hyacinthe et célébrer Apollon, les Hyacinthies étaient organisées en période estivale sur plusieurs jours à Amyclées, près de Sparte, où se trouverait sa sépulture.
