Élevé par sa mère, sans connaître l’identité de son père, Phaéton se rend au ciel, une fois où Clymène s'était vantée d’avoir enfanté le fils d'Hélios. Son père lui jure sur les eaux du Styx de lui offrir ce qu’il souhaite qui puisse lui prouver son ascendance divine. Phaéton lui demande alors de conduire le char du Soleil pendant une journée. Hélios refuse d’abord, se targuant même que Jupiter, le roi des dieux, n’oserait pas le conduire, car le char est brûlant et les chevaux soufflent des flammes. Voyant l’insistance de son fils, le dieu solaire accepte de lui prêter son attelage. Le jour venu, Phaéton ne parvient pas à maîtriser les chevaux féroces et perd le contrôle du char. Il embrase ainsi le ciel et la terre. Pour arrêter sa course folle, Jupiter le foudroie. Phaéton chute violemment dans les eaux du fleuve Éridan.
