                <text>Dans son œuvre intitulée La Grève – Le Creusot, le peintre Jules Adler saisit sur le vif les événements de 1899. Jeunes et vieux, femmes et hommes défilent, drapeaux tricolores à la main, devant les chevalets des mines Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul du Creusot. Le contraste est saisissant entre la dignité et la fraternité de cette population ouvrière et la dureté de ses conditions de vie.&#13;
Avec 9 000 salariés, les aciéries et forges du Creusot, spécialisées dans les produits mécaniques et militaires, sont la première concentration industrielle française à la fin du 19e siècle. Elles sont dirigées d’une main autoritaire et paternaliste par la famille Schneider, qui règne charitablement sur tous les aspects de la vie de l’ouvrier et de sa famille, du berceau au tombeau. La dépendance ouvrière est telle qu’un licenciement est synonyme de départ forcé de la ville, ce qui explique sans doute l’absence de grèves depuis celles dirigées en 1870 par Adolphe Assi et Jean-Baptiste Dumay, l’éphémère maire de la Commune du Creusot l’année suivante.&#13;
Les trois vagues de grèves qui se succèdent au Creusot entre mai 1899 et juillet 1900 sont loin d’être isolées. Le tournant du siècle est agité par des grèves nombreuses et retentissantes, dont plusieurs sont menées à quelques kilomètres de là par les mineurs de Montceau-les-Mines. Mais elles sont remarquables car les salariés revendiquent le droit de se syndiquer, comme la loi de 1884 les y autorise. </text>
