À la suite de cet événement marquant qui ravagea une grande partie de la haute-ville, les architectes Robelin et Gabriel proposèrent de nombreux projets novateurs, dont la réflexion se trouve illustrée à travers des plans architecturaux, des almanachs et une riche iconographie des bâtiments mis en avant dans l’Exposition. Un coup d’œil comparatif sur d’autres villes de France nous permet d’appréhender les répercussions de cet incendie dans le cadre plus large des transformations urbaines du XVIIIe siècle. Ainsi, notre travail muséographique a pour enjeu de montrer comment ce renouveau architectural, qui reflète non seulement une réponse à la catastrophe, témoigne aussi des aspirations à un urbanisme plus moderne, fonctionnel et en phase avec les idées des Lumières.
