Les bateaux descendant le Rhône de Lyon à Arles effectuaient la remonte grâce à la traction animale. Au XIXe siècle, pour les plus opulents, les équipages pouvaient être accompagnés de 30 à 80 chevaux, mulets ou boeufs, chargés de tirer et remonter les lourds convois. Il s'ouvre sur toute sa longueur de façon latérale grâce à deux charnières en fer fixées sur le dessus qui permettent de soulever un pent du toit. Ce coffre porte un décor sculpté en bas relief. Sur le dessus, on trouve, sculptée en très bas relief l'inscription : "CE // QUASSET APARTI // EN A PI // ERRE FLURI // F.P.M" entrecoupée par les charnières. Le pent du toit mobile est encadré d'une bordure de chevrons et présente deux rosaces polygonales cernées de dents de scie encadrant un bouquet de fleurs présenté sous forme de volutes formant un coeur dans sa partie supérieure. Sur la façade basse du coffre encadrée de dents de scie, on trouve des motifs de poissons de petite taille diversement orientés dans la partie inférieure. Cette spécificité entraîne une ligne de cassure entre panse et fond. Confectionnées avec une argile peu épaisse, elles étaient très fragiles. Pour pallier ces difficultés, ces contenants étaient protégés par une enveloppe en osier ou en paille (paillon) très comparable à celle des dames-jeannes actuelles. Périssables, ces protections n’avaient jusqu’à présent jamais été retrouvées. Mais en 2011, les fouilles subaquatiques menées dans le Rhône ont permis pour la première fois d’en identifier un fragment. Le fond plat de ces amphores leur conférait très probablement une plus grande stabilité lors de la diffusion fluviale à l’intérieur des Gaules. Amphore découverte lors des fouilles d’Arles-Rhône 3, un chaland échoué dans le Rhône à Arles en 2011 et quasiment complet. Cette découverte majeure a permis de découvrir et d’étudier le fonctionnement du commerce rhodanien au IIe siècle ap. JC. En effet, le chaland contient toute la marchandise transportée ainsi que le matériel des mariniers.
